Protein

The building block, it is essential for the growth, maintenance and repair of bodily tissue. Proteins are found in the skin, tendons, muscles, ligaments, bones, teeth and hair. Not only are proteins found in the structure of the body, but also have physiological functions within the body.

Enzymes are proteins, they control the chemical reactions in the body, including digestion, also some hormones and antibodies are proteins; which your body needs to stay healthy and fight infection.

Protein is very important in the body’s regeneration and growth and this is why we need to consume high levels of protein in our diet.

 

 

Carbohydrates

Simply put, this is the energy source from our diet. The body’s cells primarily use a mixture of carbohydrates and fats for energy, within exercise and movement, muscles cannot complete contractions without a carbohydrate source. Fibre is a form of indigestible carbohydrate that ensures efficient gut function and reduces the risk of gastrointestinal illness.

Carbs make up the bulk of a diet, 50% of your dietary intake is a given norm. An individual who has a higher energy expenditure however, may need a higher percentage of carbs, for stored usable energy.

Carbohydrates turn into glucose, which your body burns immediately or converts to glycogen to be stored in the muscles and liver for between meals. If you eat more calories from carbs or other sources than your body can use, the cells store the excess as fat so it is important to ensure that this is balanced within your meal selection.

 

Fats

The ‘good fats’ are essential in the body for protection of internal organs, insulation, a stored energy source, growth, repair and vitamin uptake. Controlling which fats go into your diet is key to effective weight control as having to many fats in your diet can have a negative effect on the body which could lead to weight gain and obesity.

Excessive fats can also contribute to diseases, such as Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), however having too little fats in your diet can lead to skin and hair to become malnourished and compromise the effectiveness of vitamin uptake within the body.

Fats are still just as important and essential to a healthy, balanced diet.
